When Urban Becomes Sub-Urban by Seleste deLaney

I've loved urban fantasy since I first stumbled on the genre. The idea of monsters and the undead lurking in our cities and preying on the people who live there is alternately thrilling and terrifying (considering most big cities already have their fair share of human-monsters). Pretty soon a thought hit me: why focus on cities?
First, for the obvious reasons- a lot of people live in cities, and generally crime rates are higher so extra incidences aren't going to snag immediate interest. But if all the vampires and all the werewolves live in big cities it's no longer a couple extra deaths or attacks, it's a lot of them. The opposite problem presents itself in paranormals set in really small towns. Quite frankly, there aren't enough people for supernaturals to hide effectively and a marked increase in violent crimes won't go unnoticed.
It's one of the reasons I prefer to write my paranormal stories in the suburbs-there are a ton of people there. People might know everyone on their street, but they're equally likely not to know anyone but those who live right next door. With lives as busy as theirs, a lot of people don't really notice their neighbors too much unless they're a nuisance. Plus the crime from the city tends to spread to the burbs to some degree.
The contrast of nice suburban living with the grittiness of the city gives me writer and my readers the best of both worlds. Plus, the suburb area around Detroit has such great variety that the possibilities are endless.
I like to buck conventions. It's part of who I am, and I hope it shows through in my work.

Inspirational Romance and Suspense Author-Mary Eason Joins the Blog

I started writing as a pre-teen after I started reading romance novels. I love everything about the romance novel world. My ideas might come to me from something I've seen on TV, read about, or even in a dream, (as crazy as that sounds, I've created lots of stories from dreams). With the original premise in mind, I take a few days to let the story develop in my head before putting it down on paper. It never fails that the end result is nothing like what I believed it would be when I started the story. In my work, I like think a good romance novel should be like a rollercoaster ride, crazy, exciting, a thrill ride of emotion. When the reader gets to the final words of my novel, I like them to leave the story with emotional satisfaction.

I grew in Southeast England, in a coal mining village my husband calls, “The place that time forgot.” It is nested between the notorious city of Canterbury and the medieval town of Dover.
Every summer, when I was a child, we would visit my aunt and uncle at their quaint little cottage on Salisbury Plain. It was called Scotland Lodge and was situated not far from the historical Stonehenge. My uncle worked as a farm hand for the local squire. My aunt tended the manor house. It was there as I roamed free, deep within the English countryside, that I experienced joy, enchantment and some very strange and frightening occurrences. It was like a fairytale kingdom with a sinister twist. I came to Canada as a nanny, when I was 21. This vast and majestic country has served me well, but England will always be home. I live in Alberta with my sports crazy husband, adorable Sheltie dog and cantankerous ginger cat. We have two grown children. They are the gems in my treasure chest. I love this part of the country, except for the winters. It can be a chilly minus -30 for days on end. Burr…..
The memories of my summers at Scotland Lodge have stayed with me as a sort of nagging unsolved mystery all my life. A few years ago I revisited my childhood wonderland (the old place still emanates a strange and eerie essence) and was lead by some mysterious force into concocting this story and writing this book. It is from my mystifying experiences at Scotland Lodge that this book has emerged.
My life has been a fascinating journey so far but nothing compares to my mystifying summer holidays at Scotland Lodge.

Military Lifestyle Inspires Author Lila Munro

Hi everyone! I’m Lila Munro, writer of contemporary erotic romance. I’d like to thank Annette for allowing me to pirate her space today to talk about myself, about writing, and about my work. I’m very excited to be here.
A little about me: Before I started this writing journey it never occurred to me that anyone would ever care if I drank Coke or Pepsi. It seems if you sell One copy or One million copies, readers want to know your secrets. I’m a native born Missourian, but being married to a marine for the last fourteen years, I’ve lived in a few states, the current being North Carolina. My nest is empty save two dogs and a guinea pig. I’m a voracious reader. I love the aquarium, the museum, the beach, espresso laden caramel frappes, white wine, and all things chocolate. A good hot bubble bath never hurts anything. My story lines take me to some of the most unusual places for research. Most recently those places included a gentlemen’s club and an online field research trip, prompted by a man I met researching clubs, into the underground local leather scene. I did the fast food thingy in high school. I’ve also been a convenience store clerk, cleaned motel rooms, written for a local newspaper, sewed in a garment factory, did telemarketing, dabbled in banking, and worked for a video/audio medium as a vendor representative. I hold two bachelor’s degrees and an associate degree, and have a certificate in pharmacy technology. I’m the Jackette of all trades. Oh wait, Coke—definitely Coke, Zero if available.
I’ve come across so much inspiration living the military lifestyle that I’ve garnered settings to work with I might not have otherwise had. The diversity of people and cultures lends itself to character development. I’ve seen more real life love stories unfold in the most unusual ways than I can probably write about in a lifetime. The most important inspiration I glean from all this is the marine as an alpha hero. I simply love alpha heroes and the more alpha the better. Who better to mold them after than devil dogs that yell OOH-RAH! all day? So, what’s the moral to this little tale? Write what you know. I know the military and what I can’t figure out, I turn to my in-house research center, AKA hubs, for help.
All that being said, I suppose it’s time for me to introduce you to a couple of my alpha heroes on steroids. The Executive Officer’s Wife, my debut novel, released August 10th. Libby Calhoun was born into the military lifestyle and by uncontrollable circumstances finds herself alone and taking care of herself the better part of her life. When her father goes missing in a combat zone, her hero, Chase Wayland, shows up in full-on alpha mode ready to save the day and get the girl.
Also released, Bound by Trust, published through Whiskey Creek Press-Torrid. This story also revolves around a marine hero, Rafe McCarthy. He finds himself neighbor to a grieving war widow, Madi Melbourne. Madi needs schooled in the art of trust and Rafe believes he’s just the man for the job.

The Felon's Apprehension Act of 1878-Margaret Tanner

In colonial Australia, families of ex-convicts and poor Irish immigrants were often on the receiving end of an unfair English justice system which favoured the rich and powerful.
Against this background, Ned Kelly, his brother Dan and their friends  formed a gang and became bushrangers (outlaws). They were hated by the authorities but revered and aided by many ordinary folk who thought Ned Kelly had been persecuted and forced into crime.
On the 26th October 1878 at Stringybark Creek, the Kelly gang stumbled into a police ambush. They shot and killed three police troopers and wounding a fourth. This event put a price on Ned Kelly’s head.
Desperate to catch the bushrangers the government  revived an obsolete medieval law called the Felon’s Apprehension Act of 1878.
This enabled the Kelly Gang to be officially proclaimed as outlaws. The law authorized any person to shoot the proclaimed dead like wild beasts without demand for surrender or any due process.
In December 1878, the Kelly Gang came out of hiding to hold up the bank in Euroa, their first public appearance since the Stringybark Creek murders. They made their way to a sheep station on the Faithful Creek.
The next day, at the exact time the Licensing Court was in session and the town's only policeman otherwise occupied, the Kelly gang robbed the bank and got away.
Later, at the Glenrowan hotel, Three of the gang were killed when the hotel was set alight. Ned escaped but returned clad in heavy armor to save his brother. limited in movement from the armors weight, Ned was brought down by shots to his legs, the only part of his body still exposed.
Ned Kelly was put on trial, found guilty and hanged in what is now known as the Old Melbourne Jail.
There are many myths and legends about Ned Kelly and his gang. For years it was whispered that Dan Kelly actually escaped the hotel at the height of the siege, before the hotel was set ablaze. Even though three charred bodies were later found in the ruins, one did not belong to Dan. Rumour has it that a catholic priest who went into the hotel before it was sent on fire, to give the men the last rites, discovered that Dan wasn’t there, and that Joe Byrne and Steve Hart were already dead. Fact or fiction, the priest would never confirm it one way or the other.
I visited the Old Melbourne Jail, now a tourist attraction and is open to the public. The stone cells are small and icy cold, holding an aura that chilled me to the bone. At night not a skerrick of light comes in through the tiny window near the roof. When the door of the cell shuts, I swear, you feel entombed. Spooky even in daylight, Ned Kelly's death mask and scaffold still stands with the rope swinging over the trapdoor.

Jane Toombs Creates an Underworld Series

I often use Michigan’s Upper Peninsula wilderness, where I live, as my paranormal book settings. Why? Because in isolated areas, anything can happen. I also use alternate worlds for paranormal happenings, because then I’m not hampered in my writing by the “real” world.
The Underworld, an alternate world I’ve created,  has nothing to do with Satan and damnation. It lies close to our world. It’s possible for humans to fall into this underworld if they’re close to a gate, as the heroine does in my second story, coming in January, Unwanted.
It’s also possible for those in other alternate worlds to fall into the underworld by accident or to be drawn into it by a guide. Guides are extremely rare and are the only ones who can pass back and forth between worlds and even escort those from other worlds. This is what happens in my first story, Unwise, out this month from Eternal Press. http://www.eternalpress.biz/
These paranormal suspense romances that I've created are also fantasy based. Each  novel in this series features a different country in the Underworld.
In Unwise, which is available now from http://www.eternalpress.biz/ the country is Halona, which is a kingdom. The heroine, Princess Lelani, is the eligible young daughter of a widowed king, She has always dreamed of being courted by a handsome prince and is distraught when her father informs her that he has betrothed her to another older widowed king.
She doesn’t rebel, but she does go on a picnic with all her attendants. When a storm interrupts the picnic, what happens changes her entire life.
The next book in the series, my work in progress, will be titled Uncanny. As far as I know now, this book will take place totally in an Underworld country, but that’s not nailed down yet. It’s about a baby that never would have survived infancy if not for someone else’s need.
Although I’m a plotter, sometimes a better idea strikes me as I’m writing, and I incorporate it, which changes the entire outcome of the book.
Why am I a plotter? I don’t plot, I tend to wander down dead ends and pathways that lead nowhere. If I change Uncanny, I’ll have to rewrite my synopsis to fit the new tale that will emerge from the change.   Of course, I often don’t stick rigidly to the plot. With a synopsis lifeline available, I can dig my way out of the muck, shake off the wordy mud and get back on the path.

John Lindermuth Explains His Take on Technique

The average person is rarely concerned about technique when reading a novel. But they’ll know when it isn’t there.

Technique is the business of the writer. It consists of such varied ingredients as character, plot, dialogue, style and point of view. Think back to the last novel you enjoyed and considered what it was made it memorable.
Most times that element will be character.
So how does a writer create a memorable character? You might describe his/her appearance, job, eccentricity, desires, and other such aspects of personality. Yet all of these are no more than statistics. Statistics are generally dull and don’t stick in the mind.
The secret is the one ingredient too often forgot.
Whether your favorite is Emma or Hannibal Lector, Frodo or Scarlett O’Hara, Mister Darcy or Ishmael, they all share one thing in common. They inspire emotion in the reader. It doesn’t matter if that emotion be love or hate, pity or envy. The important fact is they stir emotion and that makes us remember them.
Without emotion, a character is lifeless. You can list all the statistics you want. It won’t do the trick.
Instilling emotion in our characters isn’t something which can be learned from a book or taught. It comes with practice. Lots and lots of practice.

Author Cassie Exline Writes from Everyday Occurrences

 A personal note from Author Cassie Exline:
As an author I've been asked lots of times where do I get the ideas for the stories or novellas I write. The answer is from several places— could be from a silly commercial or a scene from a movie or a lyric from a song.
To explain a bit better. In said commercial we see several customers standing in line. A female customer notices a handsome man she thinks she knows. She gets out of line and approaches him. In commercial she has bad breath and the guy make a face and runs out of the store.
We're only limited by our imagination.
As I was leaving the grocery store once, I noticed the community bulletin board. Lots of ads but one caught my attention: Computer tech can fix anything. Well I wondered if he could fix my overheating problem of my computer. In my story, the computer guy put out the heroine’s burning fire.
The Sheryl Locke Holmes Mystery Series came about due to a submission call from Wild Child Publishing. My love for jewelry took over and I made one of the main characters a jewelry designer. It’s an idea I’ve often thought about writing. In keeping with the series, each stone—Amber, Ruby, Opal and Pearl—are also names of characters.
Cassie Exline was born in the South and raised in the North. Whether it is a romantic journey or one filled with suspense, and off times dusted with sizzling action, Exline can deliver. She works for a small town newspaper along the east coast of the United States in Pennsylvania. Writing contemporary romance, erotica, and mysteries have become her joy.

Heather Kuehl Shares Her Writing Experiences

Here's some things I wish I knew before stepping foot into the publishing industry: Many times, it's who you know, not what you write. I also learned, through submitting short stories, that editors could be downright mean. I've gotten more than one unkind rejection so much so that I get nervous when I see a response in my inbox. However, I must say that most editors, when taking the time to write personal feedback, are kind in making their suggestions. Most editors are writers and they know how hard it can be to get published. Without this knowledge, I would have still become an author but I think I would have been better prepared if I had known those two main things first.


As I published more stories, and worked on my books, I started learning things. Even in the short story field, many times it depends on who you know that will get you published not what you write. I had a brush with this while submitting a flash fiction story. I published in that particular market before and frequented the same message boards as the editors. When the rewrite request came, I was surprised they originally were going to reject my story but knew that I had more to offer than routine vampire fiction and, from interacting with me, I'd be open to their thoughts on my story. I revised and that market published my story. While working to make the story better, I realized it was the fact the editors knew me that got me noticed. I had read that a writer should go to conventions to meet editors and agents because it's those connections that could land bestseller list status but I didn’t actually believe it until then.

The best advice I can give to aspiring writers is to never give up. Grow a thick skin because everyone has different reading tastes. All that matters is your own opinion of your story or book. Publishing is generally a long hard road but in the end, all worth it.

SOMETIMES THE MYSTICAL PART ISN'T YOUR IMAGINATION!

As a writer of the Paranormal Romance Genre, I love creating mystical and mysterious places that have the special touch of paranormal. A lot of authors create their own worlds but since all of mine are contemporary settings, I end up searching for places that really exist.  Two of my books, Temptation Unleashed and Her Heart His Soul, both took place in a very mystical location in Arizona called Sedona.  its a beautiful city with amazing scenery, red rocks, ley lines, magical history and spiritual atmosphere.  A person can't visit there without feeling they've been touched by something mysterious.  What better place as setting for Temptation Unleashed-my shape shifter novel involving a family who lived there in harmony with the magic the land offers?  Also, hidden in the Arizona mountains, the best backdrop for a mysterious government controlled lab, is my angel-demon character from my novel Her Heart His Soul.

One quarter of all Billie's royalties from the sale Money Isn't Everything will be donated to the Amberg Community Action Program for their projects to improve the community for all it's residents and visitors.
