Aloha From Hawaii and Resident Mary Deal

Kauai, where I live, is the northern-most island in the Hawaiian archipelago and the most remote land mass on earth! The serenity of this place accommodates the writer. That’s if you don’t listen to the beaches calling your name. Besides my books, I also write short stories. One was nominated for the coveted Pushcart Prize. My thriller, River Bones, has received two major awards. I’ve found Kauai to be a wondrous place where concentration on work reigns supreme.

Some of my articles about writing have appeared in my column Write It Right for our local newspaper. Now I’ve put many of my articles together in a reference for writers: Write It Right – Tips for Authors – The Big Book.

During my first tour of The Islands in 1974, I knew I would one day live on Kauai. It took 21 years. After a car accident in 1991 that changed my life, I decided that since I wanted to live on Kauai, I would move there. I could from anywhere in the world. I moved. Then I learned the difficulties of island life. While most believe I live an idyllic life, few resources and connections are found here. All my promotion and contacts must be managed through the Internet unless I travel. Small Kauai has only two book stores and used books at that.
Hawaii consists of five main islands. Each island has its own flavor and main attraction. Beginning at the southern-most end is The Big Island. It’s real name is Hawai`i, but nicknamed The Big Island. It offers Halemaumau Crater with lava flows. Northward is Maui offering Lahaina, where whaling ships once came to port. The smaller island of Molokai is mostly residential. Oahu, which translates to The Gathering Place, is the main island and offers Honolulu and Waikiki Beach as its main attractions. Kauai is nearly 100 miles north of Oahu and known as The Garden Island because we have lots of rain and everything grows. If needed, out of necessity, Kauai could support her residents with food and crops grown locally. We also have more beaches than all the other islands combined.

Kauai is a world away from everything. Air flights are expensive and arduous getting to and from the mainland for book signings. Yet, most who live here, including me, say they would never live any place else, except maybe on one of the other islands.

  1. I do love me some Mary Deal! lol Mary is not only a great writer but also a talented artist and photographer. I keep telling her I'm coming to visit. After reading all about HER particular island, I'm salivating. Nice to get to visit with her even if it's across thousands of miles. Thanks, Annette!

  2. No secret that I love Hawaii. When I went there, it felt like coming home though I'd never been there before--in this life. I had a really hard time returning to Nebraska--though there's nothing wrong with Nebraska either.

  3. I've only been to the islands once, but it was definitely memorable.

  4. I went to Hawaii last year for the first time and fell in love. I think I could call the islands home. but my children don't want me that far away. They like being able to get in their car and visiting. But I will go back. Thanks for sharing.

  5. Hi, Mary,

Mahalo for the quick glimpse of the islands of Aloha. They are my favorite place on Earth, though I am partial to the Big Island. I go as often as I can, but it's not often enough!

  6. I'm sure there are disadvantages to living in Hawaii. I'm also sure they don't outweigh the advantages!

  8. Once more I need to say how very brilliant this tour of 50 states is. I am learning so much, and am loving the guided tours. Mary, I've never been to Hawaii but, as always in this series, enjoyed the personal views you shared.

  10. Thank you for a beautiful picture of your home. Hawaii is someplace I've never been but always wanted to visit. Astrologically, I was told to move to Kona, but at this time in my life it's not feasible to be so far away from the mainland and family. So perhaps in my next life. Kudos for your writing and art and much success.

  11. It's amazing how many people have been to Hawaii and how many wish to come but haven't. My first time here was the treat of a lifetime. I knew I had to live here at some point in my life. Now here, I will not leave. What would happen if everyone came and felt the same way and stayed?
