Nicole Zoltack Brings Pennsylvania to Life

Pennsylvania is a state filled with rich history. Our first nation's capitol was Philadelphia. The major turning point in the Civil War – Gettysburg – is in Pennsylvania.
There's shoo fly pie and cheese steaks, Rocky, rabid sports fans, and so much more.

Earlier this year, my family and I went to Gettysburg. I love going to museums to learn interesting tidbits about minor characters, those history has almost forgotten. Only one civilian died during the battle of Gettysburg. A nurse stayed by a patient's bedside until he died and ended up meeting and marrying his brother years later.

Little nuggets of information like this makes history that much more real to me. We know all about Robert E Lee and Abraham Lincoln, but what about everyone else?

It's no wonder, with my love of history, that I write historicals. Most of mine are Regencies, but even my fantasy stories tend to have medieval-like roots to them. I'd love to write a story loosely based on that nurse one day. With all the rich history of Pennsylvania, I can write stories about so many wonderful figures and never run out of source material.

Nicole Zoltack writes fantasy/paranormal, romances, horror, historical; for adults, YA, MG, and PB; novels, short stories, and flash pieces. She's also an editor for MuseItUp Publishing and works as a freelance editor.

When she isn't writing about girls wanting to be knights, talking unicorns, and zombies, she spends time with her loving family. She loves to ride horses (pretending they're unicorns, of course!) and going to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, dressed in period garb.

  1. Hi, Nicole,

Like you, I love to read and write historical romance. It's a great idea to set an historical novel in your home state since PA is so rich in American history.

  3. You've already got me hooked on that little tidbit about the nurse and her patient's brother.
Although I have lived in North Carolina since I was five, my parents were born and raised in little towns in central, PA. I was born in Bloomsburg. Because we visited my grandparents often, I became very acquainted with the state. It's beautiful there. It seems as though every little stone has a story to tell.
I'm a big fan of Regency and medieval romance. I hope you write that Civil War story some day.
I wish you the very best...

  4. When we go to the local Renaissance Faire in Bristol, Wisconsin,we usually dress up in period clothing. It's just more fun to be there as part of the action, not just an observer.

Pennsylvania is another on our list of states we want to camp in someday. Husband is the one who likes to spend time soaking up local history. I just imagine romances while I'm there with him, though my stories are almost always contemporaries.

Thanks for sharing about your state.
